Anae now has 1,635 career kills, surpassing the mark of 1,620 set by Utah’s first All-American, Kim Turner, who played from 2000-03.

The Utes also received key contributions from sophomore setter Bailey Choy (35 assists), freshman outside Dani Barton (12 kills), junior middle Berkeley Oblad (5 blocks) and sophomore Brianna Doehrmann (17 digs).

In the first set, both teams stayed close throughout, but Utah scored the final two points on a Barton kill and block to win 25-21. Utah won more convincingly in the second frame when an Oblad block gave them the set 25-19.

The third frame went to Washington State 25-21. Cougars head coach Jen Greeny said, “I thought we served extremely well and were able to get them out of system. Our blocking definitely picked up from that point forward so I was really happy with our blocking in the third and fourth sets.” With the score knotted at 21 in the fourth, however, the Utes ran off four consecutive points to seal the victory 25-21.

The Utes travel to Arizona for a Friday match against the Wildcats, while Washington State hosts #15 Oregon, also on Friday.

#17 Utes Down Cougars in Four Sets

Adora Anae becomes Utah’s All-Time kill leader.

PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 17-ranked Utah Utes (14-3, 5-1) downed the Washington State Cougars (13-5, 2-4) in four sets (25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21) early Sunday afternoon at Bohler Gym in Pullman, Wash.

During the first set of Sunday’s match, Adora Anae became Utah’s all-time leader in kills. Anae finished the match with 20 kills to have a total of 1,635 kills thus far in her career. Anae passed Utah’s first ever All-American, Kim Turner (2000-03), who previously held the record with 1,620 kills.

Tied 11-11 in the first set, both Utah and Washington State traded points early until Anae recorded a kill which would help the Utes put together a 4-1 run. The teams went into the media timeout following the run with a Ute lead, 15-12. Out of the timeout, the Cougars countered with a 4-1 run of their own to square the frame at 16-16. Leading 23-21. A kill from Dani Barton followed by a block from Barton gave the Utes the first set 25-21.

In the second set, Utah scored four straight points to force Washington State to call its first timeout following a kill from Kenzie Koerber, trailing the Utes 12-8. The Cougars scored three of the next four points to trail 13-11, but Utah went on a 7-3 run to extend the lead to 20-14. Washington State made a late push and cut the Ute lead to just 21-18, but three straight points from the Utes earned the first set point after a service ace from Shannon Scully. Utah took the second set, 25-19, after a block from Berkeley Oblad that was originally called out, but after a challenge from Utah that there was a touch off the block, the play was reviewed and overturned.

Utah trailed 12-10 in the third set before three straight points from Washington State sent the Utes into the media timeout trailing 15-10. A kill from Koerber brought the Utes within four points, trailing 20-16, but Washington State scored four of the next six points to earn its first set point, 24-18. Utah had a late rally, scoring three straight points and forcing a Washington State timeout, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars took the set 25-21.

The Utes forced an early Washington State timeout, trailing 8-4, in the fourth set after scoring five straight points. The 5-0 run included three service aces from Anae, along with kills from Barton and Carly Trueman. With the Ute lead at 15-10, the Cougars forced a Utah timeout after scoring three straight points to only trail by two, 15-13. Tied 21-21, Utah scored four straight points to secure the match win and take the fourth set 25-21.

Volleyball Falls in Four to No. 15 Utah

WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE…
PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State volleyball team (13-5 overall, 2-4 in Pac-12) battled the No. 15 Utah Utes (14-3, 5-1) in four sets but could not grab the win Sunday morning in Bohler Gym, falling 25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21.

Taylor Mims’ double-double led the Cougars with 14 kills and 12 digs and she had six blocks. Joceylyn Urias had 11 kills with only one error in 23 attacks for a .435 hitting percentage and led the match with eight blocks, which equaled her career-high. Ella Lajos (9-1-18, .444) and Casey Schoenlein (9-3-25, .240) each contributed nine kills. Lajos also had four blocks. Alexis Dirige led the match with 19 digs. Ashley Brown and Penny Tusa combined for 41 assists. Urias, Brown and Abby Phillips each served one ace.

WSU led the match in blocks, 13 to 7, while Utah led in kills (66-48), hitting percentage (.250-.193) and digs (71-58).

WHY & HOW…
WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said, “I thought our passing wasn’t great, wasn’t consistent today, and therefore we were pretty predictable in our offense. Against a great team like Utah, we have to be more consistent in that area.

On what the Cougars did well in the third set win, Greeny said, “I thought we served extremely well and were able to get them out of system. Our blocking definitely picked up from that point forward so I was really happy with our blocking in the third and fourth sets.”

In playing without outside hitter and starter McKenna Woodford, Greeny said, “It’s a work in progress. We definitely need to get a little bit more used to it. But it is even those skills that everyone is used to being able to do that we have to be more consistent in as well. Everyone needs to do their job just a little bit better to try and fill that void and that’s what we have to work on this week.”

On being home again next Friday and Sunday Greeny said, “We would love to see fans come out to Bohler Gym. It is a great home court advantage when we can get more people out here.”

NOTES…

All six Pac-12 matches have gone four sets and the Cougars have not been swept in any match this season.

Sophomore libero Alexis Dirige now has 777 career digs, 24th-best in WSU all-time.

This is the ninth match this season that redshirt sophomore Jocelyn Urias has hit .300 or better and the fifth match she’s hit .400 or better for a match (with a minimum of three attacks per set).

Utah coach Beth Launiere coached the 2016 US Collegiate National Team – Europe with WSU coach Jen Greeny as an assistant. Cougars McKenna Woodford and Casey Schoenlein played on that team that won Gold at the Global Challenge Tournament in Croatia.

Attendance: 675
