The No. 22 Utah Utes opened play at the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic with a three-set victory over South Dakota (25-22, 25-10, 25-15) Thursday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

The Utes (3-1) and Coyotes (1-3) played a back-and-forth first match, but it was all Utah after that and the Utes would go onto earn its third straight-set victory of the season.

South Dakota opened the first set with a service ace and would match the Utes point-for-point throughout the majority of the frame until a 6-2 Utah run gave the Utes the momentum late. The Coyotes would get within two points of the Utes before a kill from Berkeley Oblad gave Utah the set, 25-22.

It was all Utah in the second frame as the Utes allowed the opposition to just 10 points in the frame. Back-to-back service aces from Kristen Ables pushed Utah’s lead to 6-1 and then a Coyote attack error forced USD to call timeout. Utah won the next point and then just closed the frame winning 18 of final 27 points.

USD would take an early 3-2 lead in the third set, but Utah countered with a 10-3 run to put the match out of reach. The Coyotes called a timeout and won the ensuing point, but a kill from Dani Barton prompted another rally and Utah would go onto close out the match with a 6-2 run.

Utah outhit the Coyotes .371 to .148, totaling 42 kills to USD’s total of 30 kills on the evening. The Utes have yet to let an opponent hit over .275 through its first four matches of the season.

Utah will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on Western Carolina in the second of three matches in Honolulu. First serve is set for 4:45 p.m. HT/8:45 p.m. MT.
