Former Top Recruit and All-Big 12 OH Lexi Sun Transferring from Texas

Former number one recruit and 2017 All-Big 12 First-Team outside hitter Lexi Sun is transferring from the University of Texas prior to her 2018 season. Sun, who will be a sophomore in 2018, has yet to pick a new school as she is completing the spring semester in Austin – which ends in the middle of May.

“This is about Lexi and her family,” Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott said. “We think she is a wonderful young lady. We have a lot of respect for her and wish her the best of luck.”

Sun came to Texas after she was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year. The 6’2″ product from Santa Fe Christian School in Encinitas, California made an immediate impact for a Longhorns team that won the Big 12 and made it to the Elite Eight.

Beyond her countless awards – All-Big 12, All-Southwest Region, 2017 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, All-Big 12 Freshman Team – Sun totaled 337 kills (3.27 per set) on a .277 mark, 151 digs (1.47 per set), 65 blocks (0.63 per set) and 18 aces (0.17 per set).

“I want to thank all of the people that have impacted me throughout my time here at the University of Texas,” Sun said. “I know the Longhorn volleyball program will continue to be successful and I wish them nothing but the best.”

Texas should still have plenty of firepower for 2018 returning, led by outside hitter Micaya White and Yasmeen Bedart-Ghani at the position. They now may be in a spot to look for another recruit, transfer or a position change to add depth to the group, which will be interesting to keep an eye on as we approach the summer.

Always tough to have a player of that caliber leave, but should she end up at USC, that would be ironic. The Trojans lost a quality player to Texas a few years back. Who knows?

Hope she looks at Hawaii… needs a impact hitter on the outside.
