According to an article in the Wisconsin State Journal, Wisconsin volleyball head coach Kelly Sheffield said that at least part of the upper-balcony at UW Field House could be open next season.
This could be big potential news for the Badgers, who with recent success at the highest level, have been consistently filling the stands. In fact, Wisconsin sold out 15 of their 16 matches this season and averaged just short of 6,000 fans in attendance per match.
Those numbers ranked them third in the country in attendance, as they only sat behind Hawaii and Nebraska in that regard. The Rainbow Wahine averaged a few hundred more while Nebraska’s average attendance was in the 8,000 range, so with additions in seats Wisconsin could challenge those top two.
The specific number of the seats is not totally known since the exact plans have yet to be released by the University. However, per the Wisconsin State Journal, opening up that balcony could add over 3,000 seats.
It’s always a fine line with adding seats because you don’t want to mess with a loud, close-knit environment. That is especially true in adding so many. That being said, with so much success and a high demand to get in the building, it would be an easy choice for Wisconsin to expand their crowd capacity.
