Iowa and Indiana turned heads with Big Ten-opening victories Friday night. The Hawkeyes downed Michigan State for the first time since 2009, while the Hoosiers notched its 2nd conference-opening win in the last 10 years.

Iowa extended its win streak to 7-straight matches with a Big Ten-opening sweep of Michigan State in Iowa City, Iowa, Friday. The Hawkeyes, who have now won each of its last two conference openers after a 7-year drought, ended a 16-match skid against the Spartans, dating back to 2009.

The Hawkeyes outdid the Spartans in attack percentage, .290 to .134, blocks, 11 to 8, and service aces, 5 to 0, to notch the win.

Indiana def. Northwestern 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18)

Indiana opened the Big Ten slate with a 4-set victory over Northwestern in front of a crowd of 1,426 fans in Bloomington, Ind. It is the 2nd time in the last 10 seasons that the Hoosiers have started conference play with a victory.

To earn the win, Indiana hit .336 and outblocked its opponent, 11 to 8. Northwestern was held to a .192 attack percentage in the loss.
