For the second consecutive week, Northeastern sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Amy Underdown is taking home the Colonial Athletic Association’s Offensive Player of the Week award. Underdown is one of three honorees for the week along with McKala Rhodes (College of Charleston) and Kodi Garcia (Elon).
A native of Temecula, California, Underdown averaged 5.29 kills per set for a week that included two road wins for Northeastern. Those wins came against Delaware and Towson too, as Northeastern gave the Tigers just their second loss of the season en route to a 4-0 CAA start. In the first match against Delaware, Underdown posted 13 kills, six digs and four aces and followed it up with a fantastic 24 kill, 10 dig, four block, four ace performance in the win at Towson.
Joining Underdown in the weekly awards was McKala Rhodes, the CAA Defensive Player of the Week. Similar to Northeastern, Rhodes’ College of Charleston won both matches for the week against UNC Wilmington and James Madison. In the first match, Rhodes totaled 27 digs in four sets before posting 27 again in a five-set match that gave James Madison their first loss of 2017.
Rounding out the trio of awardees is Kodi Garcia, who collects the CAA Rookie of the Week. Although its not a second consecutive award like Underdown, Garcia is bringing home the honor for the second time this season. The freshman setter notched 82 assists as Elon went 1-1 with its only loss coming to a then-unbeaten James Madison squad. The win came against William & Mary in four sets, when Garcia collected 60 assists, the highest conference total this season.
