Arkansas State junior outside hitter Carlisa May had a memorable weekend as she hit the 1,000 kill plateau for her career. The specific moment came in the team’s first match of the week against Coastal Carolina, as she added to it in a five-set win against Appalachian State in a 1-1 weekend of matches.
A 5’10” outside hitter from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, May made an immediate impact with Arkansas State in 2015 as a true freshman. In earning Honorable Mention AVCA All-American honors, First-Team All-Sun Belt and more, she led the team with 365 kills on a .300 hitting percentage. At that point, it was apparent that May would be well on her way to the 1,000 mark for her career.
She built off those numbers in 2016 en route to Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year as she notched 445 kills, giving her 810 kills for her career. So far she has only added to it this year with 208 kills to give her 1,018. As long as she continues on this pace she will finish in the top three of the program all-time as she shoots for the school record of 1,789 held by Margie Kolat. She’s not too far off from the top 10 either, with Pip Soulsby‘s 1,144 the mark needed to beat to crack that list.
Currently Arkansas State owns an 8-7 overall record as they just began Sun Belt Conference play at 1-1. It’s an important part of the season as they look to get redemption for last year when they went 25-8 (15-1, Sun Belt), but were upset in the tournament finals. The conference slate will continue as May looks to rack up more kills starting Friday as the Red Wolves travel to Lafayette to take on Louisiana.
