Class of 2018 recruit Allegra Rivas has committed to the University of Maryland women’s volleyball program. Standing at 5’10”, Rivas is mainly a defensive specialist/libero who can also play the the setter position.
A senior at Aledo High School in Texas, Rivas helped her school to a 37-14 finish in 2017. In her final season – and third year of varsity at Aledo (varsity as a freshman at Saginaw High School) – Rivas recorded a whopping 1,100 digs (7.6 per set), 192 assists (1.3 per set) and 58 aces (0.4 per set) according to her MaxPreps profile. That led to her being named the Fort Worth Texas high school Super Team Defensive Player of the Year.
Club wise, Rivas plays with Texas Advantage Volleyball and the 18 Black team. Video of some of her play via Hudl can be seen here.
The commitment represents one of the first handful for new head coach Adam Hughes, who takes over for Steve Aird (who left for Indiana). The Terrapins are coming off of an 18-14 season in 2017 in which they went 7-13 playing in the Big Ten and were one of the first teams left out of the NCAA Tournament. The addition of Rivas helps add depth to the DS/L position in 2018, as she joins just two returners at the spot.
Big Congrats to @allegrarivas and her commitment to The University of Maryland!! Good luck! We are so proud!?? pic.twitter.com/Enxu9PhdOY

Congrats to Allegra!
Maybe Volleymob can figure out what’s up with Maryland’s Angel Gaskin, whose college was listed at “TBA” on the USA women’s national team tryout list:

And finally she’s now not on Maryland’s roster.
Good question. We’ll look into it and see what we can find!
