SIUE senior outside hitter Ashley Witt became the 10th player in school history to hit the 1,000 career kill plateau on September 27 against Eastern Illinois. Witt totaled six kills in the match as the Cougars came out on top in four sets.
A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Witt joined SIUE in 2014 and set the school’s freshman record for kills in a season (309). That number went down a bit in year two, but was still high at 293 as her kills per set rose. Then, last year in 2016, she tacked on another 253 giving her 855 for her career through three seasons. Of course, she then surpassed 1,000 career kills about a week ago.
Currently in 2017, Witt is second on the Cougars in kills (159) and kills per set (2.56) while hitting at a respectable .229 mark. She now has 1,014 kills in her final season of play, as reaching 1,000 put her in the school’s top 10 while she moved into ninth all-time with her performance against Belmont. It may be difficult to reach the top five (Kristen Torre with 1,256 is in fifth), but sixth (1,179 held by Kindra Westendorf) may be attainable.
SIUE is 12-4 on the season and 2-2 early on in conference play as they took down Belmont following Witt’s historic day in the Eastern Illinois match. She will look to continue adding to her career kills total as eight more kills would move her into eighth in school history tomorrow against UT Martin.
