St. John’s will get a mid-season opportunity against a Chinese professional team to hone their craft and improve against high-level athletes.
The match for St. John’s will come on September 27 at 7 p.m. ET at Carnesecca Arena against Zhejiang New Century, one of the top teams in the Chinese Volleyball League (CVL) from a year ago. Zhejiang went 10-0 in the regular season before falling as the runner-up in the Championship match from last season.
Beyond an opportunity to fine tune some things on a date that comes two matches into the Big East portion of the schedule, St. John’s junior backup setter Yanjiao Zhao – originally from China – will get to face a team that won the CVL in 2013-2014 in her homeland.
The match also comes a few days prior to a meetings with Providence (currently 11-0) and Creighton (currently ranked 7th in the country) and should help the team be more prepared for those big tussles.
Currently, the Red Storm are off to a 7-4 start to the 2017 season, including two non-conference tournament titles at the Jack Kaiser Classic and the Cornell Invitational.
