TEMPE, Ariz. — The 25th-ranked USC women’s volleyball team (16-9, 8-6 Pac-12) defeated Arizona State (9-16, 2-11) in straight sets (27-25, 25-14, 25-18) at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday, Nov. 4. Five Women of Troy scored in double digits including freshman outside hitter Khalia Lanierwho had 12.5 points on 11 kills and three blocks. Lanier also had 10 digs to register her 12th double-double.
Senior middle blocker Elise Ruddins had 12.0 points and finished the night with eight kills (1e, 12att, .583) to go with four blocks (two solo) and a service ace. Sophomore outside hitter Alyse Ford tallied 11 kills (3e, 26att, .308) to go with four digs. Junior opposite hitter Niki Withers had 10 kills (1e, 14att, .643) with two blocks and two digs and junior opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie added nine kills (2e, 16att, .438) with a solo block and three digs.
The Trojans hit .330 in the match (49k, 14e, 106att). Junior setter Reni Meyer-Whalley posted her sixth double-double with 17 assists and 14 digs; and senior setter Alice Pizzasegola dished out 19 assists to go with four digs. Senior libero Taylor Whittingham had 14 digs and put up eight assists.
For the Sun Devils, Ivana Jeremic led with 10 kills and 10 digs for the double-double. Halle Harker had 12 digs and setter Nicole Peterson had 28 assists and seven digs.
The first set was tied 10 times and the lead changed hands seven times before the Women of Troy secured a 27-25 win. With set point in hand, the Sun Devils were undone by a service error. Ruddins and Lanier teamed up to block Jeremic on the next rally, but it was one final ASU error that closed the books on the Trojan win.
The Women of Troy led, wire to wire, in the second frame and came away with a 25-14 win. The Trojans scored 21.0 points with 15 kills, five blocks, and a service ace. USC hit .542 in the set with just two errors on 24 swings. USC scored the first seven points of the set and led by as many as 11 at 19-8 on a kill by Ruddins.
The Trojans were rarely threatened in the third frame and completed the sweep with a 25-18 win. Ford and Lanier scored back-to-back kills to give the Trojans an 8-4 lead, which became a six-point lead at 19-13 on another terminator from Ford. Ruddins and Lanier got together to stuff Jeremic once more for a 23-17 lead before the Devils surrendered the match on a final error.
Up next, the Women of Troy head north for a pair of matches in the Bay Area. USC takes on Stanford on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. PT at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Trojans and the Cardinal will appear live on ESPNU. USC then heads to the East Bay to face California on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m. PT, at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.

- USC improved to 67-13-1 in all-time meetings with Arizona State and swept the season series against the Sun Devils for the third time in four years.
- Freshman OH Khalia Lanier recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs. She also scored her 23rd double-digit points match of the season.
- Senior libero Taylor Whittingham registered her 21st match this season in double digits for digs (14).
- Whittingham’s 14 digs gives her 1,623 career digs and puts her within 80 digs of third place in USC’s all-time record books (Katie Haller, 1990-93; 1,702 digs).
- Junior setter Reni Meyer-Whalley had 17 assists and 14 digs to record her sixth-career double-double.
Arizona State:
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State volleyball team (9-16, 2-11 Pac-12) fell to the No. 25 USC Trojans (16-9, 8-6 Pac-12), 25-27, 14-25, 18-25, on Friday evening in Wells Fargo Arena.
“I was super fired up with the way we came out in the first set. We were battling them point for point,” head coach Stevie Mussie said. “I’m a big fan of the way Maya (McClendon) and Oluoma (Okaro) are playing, as well as Ivana (Jeremic). We are asking her to do a lot these days, and she is up to the task. We just need to be a lot better about hitting the ball in. That was our focus this week; passing, serving and hitting it in. We passed and served okay, but we just missed the hitting in part.”
Freshman Ivana Jeremic recorded her first career double-double, with 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior Maya McClendon and junior Oluoma Okaro each added eight kills of their own. Jeremic and Okaro both had three total blocks, including a solo block apiece.
Freshman setter Nicole Peterson recorded 28 assists on the match, and added seven digs and an ace. Junior Halle Harkerrecorded 12 digs, moving her into eighth on the school’s all-time career digs list.
USC sophomore Alyse Ford and freshman Khalia Lanier led all scorers with 11 kills each, while junior Niki Withers added 10 of her own on .643 hitting.
Up next, the Sun Devils face No. 9 UCLA Saturday night in Wells Fargo Arena. The match against the Bruins will air on the Pac-12 Network at 6 p.m. PT, with Daron Sutton and Holly McPeak on the call.
