3rd-ranked Wisconsin played its way to a Marquette Invitational title with wins over 17th-ranked Marquette, 3-0, and Illinois State, 3-1. The Badgers bring a 3-match win streak into their Big Ten home-opening matchup with Ohio State on Wednesday.

The Golden Eagles recovered from their loss in straight sets to the Badgers with a pair of sweeps of their own Saturday against Tulsa and Illinois State. Marquette enters the Big East schedule with a 9-3 record.

Tournament Notables

  • Marquette head coach Ryan Theis registered his 100th win as head coach of the Golden Eagles on Saturday evening with a sweep of Illinois State. He is in his 5th season at Marquette.
  • Sarah Rose was selected to the all-tournament team after distributing 44 assists and notching 23 digs in Marquette’s 2-1 weekend. She posted her second double-double of the season with 18 assists and 10 digs against Illinois to cap the tournament.
  • Taylor Horsfall posted 50 digs on the weekend for Tulsa to earn all-tournament team accolades. The Hurricane went 0-2 with losses to Illinois State and 17th-ranked Marquette in straight sets.
  • Lexi Varga collected all-tournament team recognition after tallying 33 kills and 6 blocks for Illinois State, which went 1-2 on the weekend. She led the team offensively with 15 kills against 3rd-ranked Wisconsin and 9 kills against 17th-ranked Marquette.
  • Dana Rettke earned all-tournament team accolades after averaging 3.43 kills and 2.14 blocks per set to lead the Badgers to a 2-0 weekend. She also hit .477 for Wisconsin in the two-match stretch.
