#2 UCLA Sweeps #11 Loyola-Chicago In Dominating Season Opener

The #2UCLA men’s volleyball team swept #11 Loyola-Chicago in straight sets in each teams opening matches of the 2017 season.

The first set started off as a trade-off of points, until 11 all when UCLA began to pull away taking a 23-19 lead. Consecutive kills from JT Hatch led to a Bruin first set victory at 25-19.

The second set started much the same as the first, as a back and forth battle until 7-7. A service ace from Will Tischler, a Ricky Gervis attack error and two Jake Arnitz kills brought UCLA to an 11-7 lead. The roll continued for the Bruins, taking a late 23-18 lead. Arnitz and Hagen Smith kills ended the second set at 25-18.

Again, the third set began by trading points until the Bruins broke away at 6-6. UCLA took and maintained a large lead the entire set, when a Mitch Stahl kill ended the set and match at 15-16.

The Burins held Loyola to a .167 hitting percentage for the match, while hitting for .384 themselves.

To lead UCLA, Jake Arnitz put down a match-best 11 kills on a .400 hitting percentage. The Bruins had solid defense at the net with Micah Ma’a dishing out 19 assists and a match-best seven blocks. Mitch Stahl added seven kills and six blocks on a .667 hitting percentage, while Oliver Martin stuffed five balls.

For Loyola-Chicago, Will Tischler hammered down nine kills, while Ricky Gervis added eight kills and six digs.
