The 2017 French champions, Chaumont VB 52 will youth and experience at the setter position as recent UC Irvine grad Michael Saeta arrives for the 2017-18 season. The experience comes in Cuban Javier Gonzalez who helped the squad to their championship this season.
Saeta has dabbled in both the setting and opposite position in his collegiate career, splitting time his junior year. His senior season was more focused on the setting portion as he dished out 980 assists on the year and 2,614 in his career, ranking him seventh all-time at UC Irvine. Saeta also finished ranking second with 161 aces in his career with the Anteaters, putting down 63 in his final season. Nationally, Saeta ranked third overall with 0.59 aces per set. Saeta gathered a First Team All-MPSF honor in his senior season.
Though young, Saeta will have some international experience prior to joining Chaumont. He will compete at the 2017 Pan American Cup for Team USA.
In the finals last season, Gonzalez started in each of the three sets that it took for Chaumont to take down Spacer’s Toulouse VB 3-0, (25-16, 25-21, 27-25). In total, Gonzalez put down five points to help the French team to the victory.
