Concordia-St. Paul capped off their 2017 season by winning their 9th NCAA Division II Title in 11 years with a sweep over Florida Southern. The title is their second straight after two years of not even making the semifinals in the tournament.
The first set started off as a tough fight for both teams as the score was tied up at 18 all along with nine lead changes throughout the set. The Golden Bears went down 20-21 but a pair of Florida Southern errors gave Concordia the 22-21 lead. Florida Southern pushed ahead with two straight points but a three-point run from the Golden Bears ended the first-set 25-23.
Taking the championship came with no easy moments, as the second set started with 10 ties and three lead changes by the time the score reached 12-11 with Florida Southern on top. The Golden Bears scored seven straight to go up 18-12, a lead that Florida Southern was not able to fight back from, dropping the second 25-20.
Concordia capped off the match with a 7-3 edge in the third set and stayed in the driver’s seat throughout the remainder of the set before winning 15-20, claiming the national title.
Shelby Seurer led the champions with 16 kills and four blocks while Hope Schiller added 10 kills and four blocks. Setter Elizabeth Mohr dished out 43 assists and 10 digs for a double-double while Tori Hanson and Erin Fallert picked up 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
For Florida Southern, Nicole Mattson put down 12 kills while Bethany Besancenez dished out 34 assists and 16 digs for a double-double.
