A high school volleyball coach resigns after school administrators accuse her of giving performance enhancers to her players.
Deborah Clark resigned her position as coach for a Westside school in Jonesboro, Arkansas after the school’s Superinterndent Scott Gauntt recommended she be terminated. Clark is accused of encouraging members of the volleyball team to drink an energy drink before games.
It was found that Clark sent a group message to her team on Sept. 13 to report to her so she could administer a “serum” to them. Gauntt said that Clark sent the message without the consent of the head volleyball coach.
Clark is said to have told players to mix “C4,” a product that contains caffeine and labeled for people over 18 years of age or older, into their water bottles without parental consent.
Gauntt said that Clark’s message to the girls is that she was encouraging and approved the use of drugs to enhance performance.
“Some players reported feeling shaky, unwell, and jittery, said their vision was affected, and reported ‘crashing’ as the caffeine effect wore off,” Gauntt said in a letter.
Gauntt is recommending that she be terminated as a teacher with the school district. Clark has been informed that she has 30 days to request a hearing with the school board.
A special school board meeting was scheduled for 6 PM on Wednesday, November 30.
Before Clark could be terminated, she submitted her letter of resignation.
