All-Conference junior college outside hitter, Gianluca Grasso, is set to join the USC men’s volleyball team for the 2017 season. Bringing in Grasso will be a monster boost to a struggling USC team.
Grasso, from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was the 2016 All-Pacific Coast Conference Co-MVP, having had 241 kills, 145 digs, 40 aces and 34 blocks as a freshman outside hitter at Orange Coast College. The Pirates were the state runnerups in 2016.
In 2015, Grasso did not play volleyball after attending Andrews Osborne Academy Willoughby (Ohio) in 2014. He spent the first two years of his high school career in Puerto Rico.
Grasso’s father, Mauro, and mother, Rejane, each played on Brazil’s national teams, his father still coaching professionally. His brother, Marco, was a setter with Pacific (2013-14) and Ohio State (2015-16), including being a part of the Buckeyes NCAA National Championship. His sister, Carol, played with Salt Lake Community College (2013-14) and Cal State Bakersfield (2015-2016), also being a part of the beach team at Cal State Bakersfield in 2015.
The Trojans are currently 2-4 this season, with upcoming matches to Stanford on January 26 and Pepperdine on January 28.
