Graduate student Brittany Howard and junior Corinne Quiggle, of the 2nd-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball team garnered the first West Coast Conference Pair of the Month honor this season after the pair’s standout performance on the sand in March, as released by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.
Since the first-ever award was given out in last year’s inaugural season, the Waves have earned all three accolades available.
Howard (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS/Stanford) and Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) were instrumental to the Waves’ success from the No. 2 position in March, helping the team climb to No. 2 in the AVCA Coaches Poll for four-consecutive weeks. The pair faced 14 opponents in March, earning a 13-1 overall record, including a 6-1 record against nationally ranked opposition. The pair has won 26-of-30 total sets played after the Waves’ 14 matches this season, including 11 with two-set victories and two with three-set wins. The duo helped Pepperdine record eight-consecutive sweeps in the back-half of March, while clinching two overall matches for the team this season.
Pepperdine opened the season on March 4 with a 3-2 upset over then-ranked No. 3 UCLA at Zuma Beach with a 21-15, 21-19 win over Kamila Tan and Madi Yeomans. In the week following opening day, Howard and Quiggle downed then-ranked No. 2 Florida State’s pair of Vanessa Freire and Francesca Goncalves with a 21-17, 14-21 and 16-14 result. The duo also downed LeeAnn Starr and Haley Pa’akaula of then-ranked No. 7 Georgia State with a 21-14, 21-15 final mark, before besting then-ranked No. 6 Long Beach State’s No. 2 partnership of Kobi pekich and Sasha Karelov with a 21-13, 21-16 victory. Against No. 10 Arizona State’s Oluoma Okaro and Madison Berridge, the duo put down the team 21-9, 21-18 to help the Waves sweep and then most-recently, clinched the 3-2 win over No. 5-ranked Hawai’i at Zuma Beach with a 14-21, 21-14, 15-9 win. The Waves only faced one West Coast Conference team in March, PCH Cup rivals Loyola Marymount, and the pair bested Britt Estes and Kekai Whitford 21-9, 21-13 en route to the sweep. The pairs only loss came from top-ranked USC’s No. 2 pair of Sophie Bukovec and Allie Wheeler in the second match of the season.
Statistics are only kept for home events. Howard leads the pair at home with 113 total kills, 15 blocks and 18 service aces this season, averaging 3.8 kills/set, 0.5 blocks/set and 0.6 service aces/set after 14 matches and 30 total sets played at Zuma Beach. Quiggle averages 3.3 kills/set and 0.37 aces/set after amassing 99 kills and 11 aces at home this season thus far.
This week, the Waves trek to Tallahassee, Fla. to compete at the Florida State Invitational.
