Team USA’s Tri Bourne was absent from the FIVB World Tour event in Rio and will be out of competition for the foreseeable future as he deals with a “freak illness” and returns from surgery.

The FIVB reports that Bourne underwent surgery in late 2016, after he and his partner John Hyden took bronze at the FIVB World Tour Finals in September. The surgery was to remove a cyst that was pinching a nerve in Bourne’s ankle. Bourne says as he was recovering from the surgery, he began noticing pain in his hands. He compared it to carpal tunnel syndrome from being on crutches, but says the pain spread throughout his body and affected his training.

Bourne was forced to pull out of the FIVB event in Fort Lauderdale back in February when a doctor told him he had to stop exercising or risk damaging his muscles. The FIVB report says Bourne had a blood test that showed abnormally high levels of liver enzymes.

Now, Bourne says he doesn’t have a solid time frame for his return, only saying that “this process is going to take longer than most people would expect.”
