Two-time All-American setter Ainise Havili got 2017 started on the right foot as she was named the season’s first Offensive Player of the Week after earning Wolfpack Invitational MVP over the weekend.
Beyond helping her top-10 team go 3-0 in the first week of action, Havili put up strong individual numbers to earn some early season recognition. In 13 sets of action over three matches, she averaged 12.31 assists and 4.15 digs per set as she had three consecutive double-doubles. She also reached the 60-assist plateau in a five-set victory over NC State on Saturday night.
Joining Havili in earning the first batch of weekly Big 12 awards in 2017 was Camryn Freiberg of Baylor (Defensive Player of the Week) and Peyton Williams of Kansas State (Freshman of the Week).
Baylor dropped its first match of the season to a ranked opponent in Florida State but bounced back with two straight wins last weekend. A big reason for that was Freiberg, a senior middle blocker who was All-Big 12 second team last season. She earned the first week’s award after totaling 18 blocks (2.00 per set).
The Freshman of the Week award went to Kansas State middle blocker Peyton Williams. Williams redshirted last season in volleyball, but played for the school’s women’s basketball team. In her debut week for the Wildcats, she hit at a more than efficient .727 clip and she averaged 3.20 kills and 1.20 blocks per set in five sets of action.
