After leading USC from unranked in the VolleyMob preseason poll to #17 in the latest VolleyMob top 25, Khalia Lanier earned some recognition from the Pac-12 as she was named the conference’s offensive player of the week.
A sophomore outside hitter originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, Lanier averaged 4.36 kills and 2.45 digs per set in the opening week. She also hit at a .400 clip and totaled four aces and blocks in the Trojans first three matches.
In USC’s 3-1 win over a ranked Michigan squad, she posted a double-double of 19 kills and 12 digs. Her performance helped her earn the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week award, the first of her career.
Joining Lanier for the weekly awards are a couple of athletes from rival UCLA in Zana Muno (Defensive Player of the Week) and Macy May (Freshman of the Week).
Muno, a junior libero, averaged 4.83 digs per set in her team’s three matches in Hawaii over the weekend. She capped off the three matches with a career-high 34 digs against then #20 Hawaii as UCLA went 3-0 in week one.
Assisting in that perfect start was the former Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year in Mac May, a 6’3″ freshman outside hitter for the Bruins. Her 3.5 kills, 1.42 digs and 0.5 blocks per set not only were big for UCLA, but also her nomination for a weekly award, as she earned the first Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
