Creighton To Build New Practice Facility Following Program Success

Following years of success on the volleyball court, Creighton has announced their plan for a new volleyball practice facility that the team would share with the women’s basketball team. The new facility would cost around $4.5 million and will be completed on the east campus athletic corridor.

Since 2009, The Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center along with D.J. Sokol Arena have been built and have housed the women’s basketball and volleyball squads for their home matches. The new facility will be an additional 16,109 square-feet for both programs to practice in.

With the volleyball team often stretching their season a month after their original ending date it often coincides with the women’s basketball season, making scheduling for both teams to practice inconvenient. With the added facility this will alleviate this problem while giving both teams more opportunities to be successful during the season and in postseason play. The addition also clears up time for Ryan Athletic Center to hold events during originally planned practice times.

The volleyball squad captured their fourth straight Big East title this season and earned the #9 seed in the NCAA Tournament, giving them hosting rights for the first two rounds of play. They won their first-round match against Coastal Carolina but were bested by Michigan State in four during the second round. This season comes after the team made the Elite Eight in 2016 along with a Sweet 16 appearance in 2015 – making this year their worst finish in three seasons.
