Creighton Picks Up Six 2016 AVCA Big East Awards

Creighton has had a terrific year, continuing their trek in the Sweet 16 this Friday against No. 12 Michigan. The team picked up six AVCA Big East awards this season, including coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth.

Being named as the AVCA Division 1 East Region Coach of the Year is Creighton’s Kirsten Bernthal Booth. The Bluejays went 28-6 this season and 18-0 in Big East play, the first 18-0 record in Big East history. Berthnal Booth is in her 14th season with the Bluejays, winning the programs third straight outright league title.

Creighton was recognized as the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year for the second consecutive season. This is also Berthnal Booth’s second consecutive AVCA Region Coach of the Year Honor at the D-1 level.

This season the Bluejays have advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season. Recently, the squad defeated No. 5-ranked Kansas in five, handing them their first home loss of the season in the second round of the tournament.

Players earning multiple AVCA East Region honors are Corinne Bain (Harvard), Abbey Bessler (Xavier), Katie Horton (Florida State) and Jaali Winters (Creighton).

Corinne Bain earned her second AVCA East Region honor after posting eight triple doubles this season, and 32 in her career. This season Bain put down 187 kills, handed out 554 assists and picked up 223 digs.

Abbey Bessler was awarded her third AVCA East Region honor. This season Bessler put down her career best 465 kills on the season and 1774 total in her career at Xavier and picked up 291 digs.

Katie Horton earned her second AVCA East Region honor. This season Horton became the 20th player in ACC history and first in Florida State history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in their career.

Jaali Winters takes home her second AVCA East Region honor. This season Winters has put down 307 kills and has picked up 259 kills.

Earning AVCA Freshman of the Year is Brittany Witt, as a defensive specialist she has picked up 389 digs and 4.05 digs/set. Her season’s best dig performance came against Northern Iowa, when she picked up 32 digs in the five set match.
