Kansas senior outside hitter Madison Rigdon collected her second Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor for 2017 as she was one of three awardees for the week. The other honorees were Iowa State’s Grace Lazard (Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week) and Texas’ Ashley Shook (Big 12 Freshman of the Week).
Over the course of the week, Rigdon led the Big 12 with 6.12 points per set and 32 kills in a pair of matches. Both of those results were wins for the Jayhawks, who won all six sets they played in. Additionally, 18 of those 32 kills came in a win at Baylor, a fellow top 25 team. For Rigdon it is her second Big 12 weekly award of the 2017 season and the fourth of her career.
From the offensive to defensive end, middle blocker Grace Lazard earns an award a different way but it was a 2-0 week for her Cyclones just like Rigdon’s Jayhawks. Lazard posted 19 blocks for the week, including 11 in one match against West Virginia. It’s the first honor of its kind that Lazard has claimed in her career, as Iowa State has won it with three separate players this season.
Rounding out the trio of awardees was Ashley Shook, the Longhorns’ freshman setter. She continued the theme of helping her team to a 2-0 week as Texas downed Texas Tech and Oklahoma on the road behind Shook’s 12 assists per set. She’s formed a dynamic duo of freshmen with Lexi Sun, as the pair has combined to give Texas a handful of the Big 12 Freshman of the Week awards.
