Louisville:
Melanie McHenry had 15 kills, three aces and three blocks to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-1 win over Virginia Tech in ACC volleyball action Friday evening in Blacksburg, Va.
“We were able to control the match from the service line tonight,” said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. “Gabbie Wiley and Morgan Miller took us on runs and gave us big leads in three of four sets. For Tess Clark to get 14 kills against a double block was awesome. It was a great team win and as usual our libero, Molly Sauer, anchors the back row and her value does not show up on the stat sheet.”
The Cardinals (7-12, 2-7 ACC) hit .283 with 10 blocks and nine aces. Tess Clark added 14 kills, hit .522 and added a pair of blocks. Jasmine Bennett had 10 kills and a team-high seven blocks. Virginia Tech (8-12, 3-6 ACC) hit .129 with six blocks. The Hokies were led by Lindsey Owen’s 10 kills and two aces.
The Cardinals used an 8-0 run late in the first set for the 25-18 win. Using .393 hitting, led by Melanie McHenry‘s five kills and two blocks from Jasmine Bennett.
In the second set, UofL zipped out to a 11-2 lead and then used a 5-0 run powered by Eleni Georgiafandis‘ serving to take a 20-5 lead. Virginia Tech, out of timeouts, managed a 3-0 run but the Cards outscored the Hokies 5-1 down the stretch for the 25-10 win.
The Hokies used an 8-0 run early in the third set to go up 11-6. The Cards answered with a 6-1 run of their own to get within one at 17-16 but were outscored 8-5 down the stretch for the 25-21 loss.
In the fourth set, there were eight ties and five lead changes as the Cardinals fended off a determined Hokie squad. The Cards used a 5-0 run midway through the set to go up 17-10 on an ace by Morgan Miller. Tech would answer with a 7-2 run to tie at 22 but the Cards ran off the final three points for the 25-22 win.
Virginia Tech:
BLACKSBURG – Senior Lindsey Owenshad a team-best 10 kills and 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season but it wasn’t enough as the Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to Louisville, 3-1, at Carilion Court on Friday evening.
Owens also finished with two service aces and two blocks for the Hokies (8-12, 3-6 ACC). Junior Cara Cunninghamtallied five kills on six attempts to go along with two blocks while senior Amanda McKinzie posted a team-high 14 digs and eight kills.
The Cardinals (7-12, 2-7 ACC) started out strong offensively but the Tech defense held them to hitting percentages of .167 and .176 in the first and second sets, respectively.
After dropping the first two sets, Tech trailed 6-3 coming out of the locker room in the third game. The Hokies responded with a 9-2 run that was capped off by a kill from Cunningham, forcing Louisville to call a timeout trailing 12-8.
The Cardinals cut its deficit to one, 17-16, but Tech rattled off three-straight points to take a 20-16 advantage. A service ace from junior Mandy Powers gave her team set point as Tech held off a late rally to take the fame, 25-22. Sophomore Kelly Esch provided a significant offensive lift off the bench as she posted four kills on four attacks in frame.
The Hokies hung with Louisville in the fourth before the Cardinals opened up a 20-14 lead. Tech refused to go away though as consecutive kills from Owens and Cunningham followed by an attack error cut the deficit to three, 23-20. Despite the momentum, the Louisville defense proved to be too strong as a block assist clinched the fourth, 25-22.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday for its annual Pink Match at 1 p.m. against Notre Dame. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a pink Virginia Tech water bottle
