There are a ton of rules surrounding the libero position in volleyball and one of them is that they are not allowed to block or attempt to block a ball during play. Cucine Lube Civitanova’s Jenia Grebennikov appears to attempts a block during a match against Wixo LPR Piacenza but does not.
Grebennikov ran wildly around the court in an attempt to help his team in the match and came in front of the 10 foot (3 meter) line and close to the net with his hands in the air, protecting himself from the attack on the other side of the net. This motion in itself caused the referee to call a violation on Grebennikov but immediately called a replay on the point as Grebennikov did not leave the floor or break the plane of the net with his hands in the air. The call from the referee to reply the point did not sit well with Wixo LPR who thought that a violation should have been called.
The play came during the quarterfinals of the Italian Men’s League quarterfinals to which Cucine Lube took two straight victories over Wixo LPR to advance to the next round of the competition. Cucine Lube finished in 2nd place in the league this season with a 22-4 record while Wixo LPR ended in 7th place with a 15-11 record.
