This week, Miles Johnson has garnished his second AVCA National Player of the Week award of his career. On top of the national player of the week, Johnson was recognized as the MIVA Offensive Player of the Weeks.
In the past week, Johnson averaged over five kills (5.11) and six point (6.22) per set, helping the Buckeyes to three victories, including two nationally-ranked opponents. In the last match of the week, Johnson produced his best work, hammering down 22 kills in a four-set victory over #4 Long Beach State. With the win, Ohio State extended their winning streak to 32 matches, tying the all-time school record.
Johnson recorded no less than 6.1 points/set average in any of the three wins, also posting a .78 aces/set. His ace against Long Beach State was the 124th of his career, surpassing Steve Potter for the most aces in a career for an Ohio State player.
With his impressive numbers this week, Johnson launched himself to the top of the national rankings for points per set. He enters the new week as the NCAA’s top point producer, posting 5.33 points/set through the first nine matches of the season.
The last time that Johnson earned both the AVCA National and MIVA Offensive Player of the Week honors was last season on February 16, 2016. It is also the second time this season a Buckeye picked up both awards (Nicolas Szerszen on January 10).
