It was a heated battle in the Italian Serie A1 Women’s League this past week as Liu Jo Nordmeccanica Modena and Imoco Volley Conegliano squared off. In the midst of the third set, both team’s head coaches were expelled from the match following an argument about a call that the first ref made.

The call was that Imoco’s Joanna Wolosz attacked the ball while it was on the opponent’s side of the net, a violation. Wolosz pleaded her case as well as the head coaches from both sides. It was deemed by the first and second referees that both coaches be ejected from the match for their actions during the dispute. You can watch the entire play and reaction below.

After further review, it was deemed that the first referee was correct upon his original call, giving Modena the point and the momentum to win the third set. The match itself was a challenging battle, with it going back and forth throughout the match. Conegliano, however, came out on top over Modena 3-2, (24-26, 25-10, 22-25, 25-19, 15-13).

Conegliano is the current leader in the women’s league with a 17-2 record and 49 points while Modena sits back in 6th place with an 11-8 record. The top-8 teams in the league will move on to compete in the playoffs later in the season.
