Zenit Kazan and Sada Cruzeiro will come out of Pool A and Trentino Volley and Bolivar out of Pool B to face off in semifinals of the Men’s Club World Championships in Betim, Brazil.
Those four qualified after Thursday and Friday concluded pool play. Kazan and Cruzeiro played in the final last year, with Cruzeiro winning. The other two programs are new to the semifinals this year.
Day 3 – Thursday, October 20
Taichung Bank beats Tala’ea El-Geish
Chinese Taipei’s Taichung Bank won its first ever match at the club world championship, topping Egypt’s Tala-ea El-Geish in a 4-set thriller, 23-25, 25-20, 25-14, 15-23.
Wang Ming-Chun had 17 spikes for 17 points to lead the victors, with Mohamed Thakil notching 13 spikes and a block in defeat.
Trentino, which won four straight club world titles from 2009 to 2012, with the Italian team topping Argentina’s Bolivar 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19.
It was a 19-point day from Jan Stokr, as Trentino moved to the top of pool B.
Sada Cruzeiro beats Zenit Kazan
Playing in front of a home Brazilian crowd, Sada Cruzeiro dispatched Zenit Kazan 25-20, 20-25, 26-24, 25-20.
After splitting the first two sets, the teams played right down to the wire in the third, but once Cruzeiro got up 2-1, the dominoes started to fall. Yoandy Leal had 15 spikes and 18 total points to lead Cruzeiro.
Day 4 – Friday, October 21
Bolivar beats Minas Tenis Clube
Coming off the loss to Trentino, Bolivar dropped its first set 18-25 against Minas, but roared back for 25-19, 25-19 and 25-22 wins to top Minas 3-1.
Pablo Crer was everywhere, earning 13 points on 5 spikes, 3 serves and 5 blocks, while Thiago Vanole put up a whopping 17 points for Minas.
Zenit Kazan beats Taichung Bank
Zenit Kazan avenged its day 3 loss, topping Taichung Bank in straight sets on day 4. Maxim Mkhaylov led the 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 thumping, scoring 11 spikes and 16 points for Kazan.
Trentino continued to dominate, taking down UPCN 26-24, 25-19, 25-23. Tine Urnaut and Jan Stokr each had 10 spikes to lead the Italians past UPCN and into the semifinals.
