The Cardinal didn’t have the best opening week to start 2018 as they fell three times and dropped from #6 to #18 in the VolleyMob Top 20 Power Rankings. Making things worse – and likely a key part of their early struggles – was that sophomore setter Paul Bischoff was out for all three matches.
In reaching out to Stanford, VolleyMob was told that Bischoff has been injured and the timetable for return is uncertain, but he is day-to-day at the moment.
A native of Wheaton, Illinois, the 6’5″ Bischoff played in 23 matches and 80 sets last season. In 2017, he amassed 681 assists (8.51 per set), 108 digs (1.35 per set), 46 blocks (0.58 per set) and 35 kills (0.44 per set).
Beyond Bischoff, Stanford possesses two setters on their 2018 roster. Through losses against Saint Francis, Princeton and UC Santa Barbara, Russell Dervay (9.13 assists per set) and Mason Tufuga (5.29 assists per set), who is listed as an opposite, have taken over the setter duties.
Through the early portion of the season, Stanford is hitting just .218 as a team. They’ll hope Bischoff can return to add depth and strong play with Dervay at the position as the Cardinal try to turn things around.
