All-Super Bowl Volleyball Team: Philadelphia Eagles

The Super Bowl airs tonight as the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots square off on the gridiron. But what about if the two met on the volleyball court? Who would be the best options to play?

Of course, this is all hypothetical and has nothing to do with volleyball skill since we don’t know how good these guys are – and if we’re guessing, there’s probably not much correlation between football and taking a swing or setting a platform to get a dig. But what we do have is athleticism and measurables.

The choices for the New England Patriots can be seen here. The picks for the Philadelphia Eagles can be seen below:

OH – Alshon Jeffery, 6’3″, WR

A big physical wide receiver with a strong vertical, Jeffery has all the athleticism and height to be an outside hitter. Keep in mind that the tallest players on the Eagles and Patriots roster are 6’6”, so a 6’3” athlete is a lot bigger than by comparison to actual Men’s Volleyball.

OH – Torrey Smith, 6’0″, WR

Smith wouldn’t be the most imposing force coming off the bus at 6’0″ tall, but he also owns a 41 inch vertical to pair with speed. He’s also got good hand-eye coordination as a wide receiver and would make for a versatile six-rotation player.

S – Nick Foles, 6’6″, QB

Sometimes it can be said that the setter is the quarterback of a volleyball team. They’re the one who facilitates and makes the pass before the play is completed and many times they’re spearheading the attack. Foles also has the height to be a presence up front. He’s a solid athlete but  great, so they may want to run a 6-2.

MB – Lane Johnson, 6’6″, OT

Johnson may be over 300 pounds, but he’s one of the more mobile offensive lineman in the NFL and ran a 4.72 40-yard dash in the NFL Draft Combine out of Oklahoma. He’s obviously got the height too  and would have the tenacity to be a defensive presence a team the net.

MB – Zach Ertz, 6’5″, TE

Ertz is one of the most mobile receiving tight ends in the NFL, so with 6’5” height up the middle and an ability to track the ball well in the air, he’d make for a strong MB. He’d give the team both a pillar defensively and a top option on slide plays.

RS – Mack Hollins, 6’4″, WR

The former North Carolina and current Philadelphia wide receiver not only is 6’4″ but possesses a 36 inch vertical. The combination of size, speed and athleticism would add to that theme from the Eagles’ fake volleyball team.

L – Nelson Agholor, 6’0″, WR

Speed, agility, ability to track down the ball in tough situations. These are all things that describe Agholor and would make him the best pick for the libero role on the team.
