Two days after a team of volleyball players from Broadfording Christian Academy was injured in a car crash, three players remain hospitalized. In total, five people were injured in the vehicle that was carrying five players and two coaches.

School officials have confirmed that all that were initially taken to the hospital have been released or are in stable condition. The players and coaches were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

“We’re very thankful for no loss of life,” said Pastor Bill Wyand, the school’s principal. “Everybody’s in stable or better condition, and that’s a blessing.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday when the team was traveling to Dayton, Tennessee for a National Association of Christian Athletes tournament. The team was driving down Interstate 81 in an SUV when a “dark-colored” SUV was traveling northbound in Jefferson country when it rear-ended a Kia Soul that had a 20-year-old woman driving and a 16-month old child inside. The SUV sent the Kia Soul across the median and into southbound traffic where it struck the volleyball squads SUV.

Those Injured

The seven injured are Sarah Grace Derr (35), Jonathan D. Ireland (23), Grace Fogle (16), Alyssa Gettel (16), Tillie Derr (16), Faith Klein (17) and Alani White (14). Derr, Ireland and Klein all remained hospitalized. Sarah was the driver of the SUV when it was struck by the Kia Soul with Derr, the mother of Tillie, suffering several broken ribs and some internal injuries while Ireland underwent surgery to help repair some internal injuries. Klein suffered head and neck injuries but has been responsive to hospital staff and up and moving around.

Due to the crash and the injuries sustained, the volleyball team will not be participating in the tournament.
