Viewing Friday’s season-opening match for the #3 BYU Cougars and #6 Lewisville Flyers as a sweep would miss the excitement of one of the best game of the young men’s collegiate season so far.
In the first set, Lewis led most of the way, but a late BYU push gave them a set point at 24-23. Lewis then had a surge of t heir own to take the next two points and score their own set point, but a late BYU timeout and three-straight points closed out the set for the Cougars.
The second set went all BYU’s way early, and it was the Flyers who had to fight back. The score sat at 22-17 before a 5-1 Lewis rally reset the score at 24-24. But two late Lewis errors from Honorable Mention All-Americans, one on a Jacob Schmiegelt serve and another on a Mitch Perinar attack, tipped the second set to BYU in extra points once again.
The third set would see no such late comeback runs, and while the two traded points for much of the set, a BYU 9-2 serge in the middle of the frame gave them a 14-11 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.
The Cougars got 17 kills on a .556 hitting percentage from Ben Patch to lead the way. Ryan Coenen was Lewis’ only player with double-digit kills, recording 10 on 20 swings with 3 errors for a .350 percentage. Schmiegelt and Perinar, in spite of their crucial errors in the second set, still had efficient performances. Schmiegelt had 8 kills with a .727 hitting percentage.
Both teams struggled from the service line, combining for 37 service errors on the game, though BYU’s 7 aces softened the blow.
