After finishing the 2017 season ranked 15th in the country after a 12-15 season, the Cal State Northridge (CSUN) men’s volleyball team is looking ahead to 2018 when they will start the year ranked 11th in the country.
It’s the first year in the Big West for the Matadors too, as they join the conference for its inaugural season in Men’s Volleyball. That should provide a challenge with all six league members ranked or receiving votes in the preseason. They’ll also partake in five ranked matches in the non-conference slate.
The season begins on January 4 with Saint Francis, followed quickly by NJIT and (RV) Princeton the next two days as part of the UCSB ASIC Invitational.
The fifth game is their first ranked foe, as #8 Stanford plays host to CSUN in Palo Alto on January 17. Among other non-conference matches, CSUN takes on four other ranked opponents at #6 Lewis (Jan. 25), at #13 Loyola-Chicago (Jan. 26), at #4 UCLA (Feb. 6) and the rounding off of a home-and-home with Stanford (Feb. 10).
The start of March not only brings a new month but also the beginning of Big West play and a new conference for the Matadors. It’s not an easy start either, with a home-and-home against #2 Long Beach State. Those two match spurts continue with the other league members in #5 Hawaii, (RV) UC Santa Barbara, #7 UC Irvine and (RV) UC San Diego.
Senior night comes on April 13 with a match against UC San Diego as well before a road match in La Jolla. After that, it’s the start of the postseason.
