The number-four ranked Long Beach State men’s volleyball team has cruised to a 3-0 start this 2017 season with a sweep over Quincy.
To lead the Beach was TJ DeFalco with 13 kills and four digs. Scott Stephanoff was closest behind with nine kills, four blocks and three digs. At the net, Amir Lugo-Rodriguez blocked six balls, while Nick Amado added five.
For Quincy Jarrod Kelso put down nine kills and five blocks, while David Siebum added seven kills and nine blocks.

The No. 4 Long Beach State men’s volleyball team turned in another solid performance as the Beach completed another sweep, this time against Quincy, to close out the UCSB Tournament. The 49ers defeated the Hawks in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-21 to improve to 3-0 on the year, while Quincy dropped to 0-3.
Long Beach State excelled on all sides of the ball on Saturday at Rob Gym as the Beach hit .320 (34-10-75) offensively and posted 11.0 blocks on defense.
Sophomore outside hitter TJ DeFalco led the offense with his third double-figure effort in as many matches as he knocked down 13 kills to lead all scorers. Junior Scott Stephanoff earned the start at opposite and added nine kills, while senior setter Curtis Stallings dished out 28 assists to pace the Beach.
Defensively, the 49ers received strong performances from Amir Lugo-Rodriguez who posted six blocks, and Nick Amadowho registered five. Additionally Stephanoff and Kyle Ensing each contributed four and three blocks in the match.
Senior libero Andrew Sato set the tone for the back row as he tallied five digs, while DeFalco posted four.
The 49ers got things going right from the start as the Beach hit .350 (10-3-20) in the first set with half of those kills coming off the hands of DeFalco. Amado posted three block assists in the frame, while Stephanoff added two to hold the Hawks to a .214 attack percentage (11-5-28).
The first set saw three ties and three lead changes early on, but Long Beach State broke a 7-7 tie on back-to-back kills by DeFalco to go up 9-7 and never looked back. From that point on, the Beach led the rest of the way holding a steady lead before winning the first set 25-17.
LBSU brought the momentum from the first set into the second as the Beach jumped out in front 7-2 as they took advantage of five consecutive Hawk attack errors. With a five-point lead, the 49ers cruised out in front and led by as many as ten points before owning the second frame, 25-15.
In the third and final set, Quincy turned in its best performance of the day as the Hawks hit .208 (11-6-24). However, Long Beach State continued its offensive attack as the 49ers hit .286 (13-5-28) and Stephanoff tallied five kills in the frame. Additionally, the Beach recorded three service aces and posted two block assists.
With the Hawks putting a little more pressure on the Beach, the set saw a total of 12 ties and six lead changes before the 49ers pulled out in front. LSBU knocked down three-straight points to take a 15-13 lead and led for the rest of the set. Despite the Hawks’ efforts, the Beach did not allow them to come any closer than two (23-21) before taking the set, 25-21.
Quincy was led by Jarrod Kelso’s nine kills and .375 attack percentage. Thane Fanfulik dished out 25 assists, while David Siebum tallied nine digs.
