TEMPE, Ariz. – Five different Dawgs had either seven or eight kills as a steady Washington effort produced a sweep over Arizona State in front of 1,596 fans at ASU’s Wells Fargo Arena. The seventh-ranked Huskies (17-2, 7-2 Pac-12) earned a sixth consecutive Pac-12 win and won for the 15th straight time in Tempe, hitting .303 as a team in a 25-18, 25-21, 25-14 sweep.
Courtney Schwan and Carly DeHoog each had eight kills, and Kara Bajema, Tia Scambray, and Crissy Jones all had seven kills in a balanced offensive attack. Washington had 42 kills to the 32 for Arizona State (8-14, 1-7 Pac-12) which was held to an attack percentage of just .074. The Dawgs led the digging totals, 46 to 40, and in blocks, 9.0 to 3.0. Schwan had 14 digs and freshman Shayne McPherson had 12, and Bajema and Scambray each had four blocks.
“The end stats don’t really tell the whole picture,” said Head Coach Keegan Cook. “It started out pretty rough for us but got progressively better as the match went on, but particularly in the third set I thought we responded and played a little better volleyball. We want to make sure we’re developing as many of our players offensively as possible, and so I thought Kara and Carly got in some good work and made some progress so that was good to see.”
DeHoog’s eight kills were one off her career-high and came with just one error on 16 swings for a .438 percentage, and Jones also was very sharp as she did not make an error with her seven kills, hitting .500. Bajema’s seven kills were her most since the Oct. 7 win at Oregon, hitting .333.
Crissy Jones put away the first kill of the match for UW on a quick set from Bailey Tanner. Schwan picked up a couple early kills as the teams were even at 4-4. The Huskies took their first lead at 7-6 on a transition finish from Kara Bajema. Carly DeHoog tipped for a point, and then Jones took care of another in the middle as the Huskies moved on top, 10-7. A couple blocks for the Sun Devils on UW back row swings kept the Huskies from making a run, but UW took the 15-12 lead into the media timeout. Scambray and Bajema stopped a back-and-forth with UW’s first block of the night for 18-14 and the Sun Devils took time. DeHoog delivered a hammer from the right pin for 19-15, then ASU missed on a set and the Devils used their final whistle. Scambray and Jones came out of the break and roofed the first ASU swing for 21-15. Destiny Julye‘s first swing came out of the back row, and she hammered off the block and out for the kill. An ASU hitting error got UW to set point at 24-16. ASU saved two, but after a solid Shayne McPherson pass, Tanner set back to Jones who slammed it to the floor to win it, 25-18. Washington hit .286 in the set and held ASU to .000. Schwan had five kills on eight swings to hit .625 and Jones killed three of six for a .500 mark. Schwan also added nine digs and Tanner had 14 assists in the frame.
DeHoog blasted up the line from the right pin and off the defender for the first point of the second set. Schwan won a joust at the net and Jones had a rightside blast for a 4-2 lead. Schwan had a creative kill as she took a wide set and spun it sharply crosscourt to surprise the Devils for 8-5. UW pushed out to a 9-5 lead after DeHoog and Bajema rejected the Sun Devils swing and another ASU error made it 10-5 and forced ASU into a timeout. The teams traded sideouts for several points, with Scambray earning a couple kills and Schwan hitting off the block on the left that fell just wide on the right sideline for 14-9. Arizona State got some momentum with a 3-0 run to cut the Husky lead down to 15-13 and UW called its first timeout. A perfect pass from McPherson let Tanner find Bajema on the quick for the big kill, then Schwan served up the first ace of the match. Another tough Schwan serve was free balled back to UW, and Bajema converted in transition as the Huskies had come back with their own 3-0 run, and ASU took time at 18-13 Dawgs. But UW got called in the net on the next point and then made errors on three of the next four points as the Sun Devils came all the way back to tie at 18 on a 5-0 run. UW sent over a free ball on the next point and ASU converted to take the lead. Another point went to ASU before the Huskies broke the seven-point run with a block to pull back to 19-20. Scambray then had a transition finish on the left to tie it, and on the next point Schwan set Julye who hit off the blocker’s head and out long to put UW back up 21-20 before Bajema missed her next serve. Jones quickly got UW the serve back with a spike to the sideline out of the middle, and then Jones and Scambray teamed for a huge rejection for 23-21. On the next point, Tanner got the better end of a joust and then ASU misplayed the free ball out of bounds to get UW to set point. Julye then promptly ended it, driving a service ace off the defender’s arms and out long for the 25-21 win. The Huskies hit .250 in the frame while ASU was at .176, with three UW blocks and two aces helping make the difference.
A right side finish from DeHoog started the Dawgs in set three as it had in set two. Tanner slammed down a 50-50 ball to make it 3-all, and then the Huskies had a 3-0 run on a Jones finish, an ASU net error, and a block by Tanner to take a 6-4 lead. Bajema posted a solo rejection of an ASU pipe attempt, and then went to work with a couple kills to open up a four-point cushion at 11-7. The Dawgs made another 4-0 run to get to 15-8 at the media timeout, as Jones killed an ASU overpass off a Julye serve, and then Jones and Tanner teamed up for a roof. The Sun Devils stopped the run out of the break, but Julye answered right back with a back row finish for 16-9. Tanner won another joust for 18-11 and then Jade Finau checked in for the first time for the Dawgs, with Cailin Onosko also subbing in to serve at 19-12. Finau picked up her first assist as Scambray hit off the block and down for 20-12. Onosko then earned a free ball for UW that Bajema pushed to the deep corner for 21-12. The Devils took their last timeout at 22-12 as the Huskies were pushing towards the finish. Senior Kameron McLain subbed in for the Dawgs out of the timeout. Scambray got the Dawgs to match point with a kill off a McPherson bump set. DeHoog capped the victory with a rocket from the right pin to the floor set by Finau, as UW finished the 25-14 win. DeHoog’s four kills led the way in the set, as the Huskies hit .393 in the final frame and held ASU to .059.
Washington now moves on to Tucson to face a talented Wildcats squad currently sitting at 5-4 in league play. That match is set to start at 11 a.m. Sunday and will air on Pac-12 Networks nationally.

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State volleyball team (8-14, 1-9 Pac-12) fell to the No. 7 Washington Huskies (17-2, 7-2 Pac-12), 18-25, 21-25, 14-25, on Friday evening in Wells Fargo Arena.
“I’m very happy with the way Oluoma (Okaro) played tonight,” head coach Stevie Mussie said. “Maya (McClendon) coming off the bench did a fabulous job. I think if we can just continue to build upon that little by little we’ll get a little bit better each week.”
Senior Cassidy Pickrell led the Sun Devils with nine kills junior Oluoma Okaro added seven of her own on .385 hitting. Both added two blocks apiece. Senior Maya McClendon added five kills off the bench.
Junior Halle Harker had 10 digs on the match, giving her 1,243 for her career. She now sits just 10 digs away from tying 2009 Sun Devil Hall of Famer Christine Garner for ninth on the school’s all-time career digs list.
Washington juniors Courtney Schwan and Carly Dehoog both had eight kills for the Huskies on .333 and .438 hitting, respectively. Freshman Kara Bajema and junior Tia Scambray each had four total blocks on the match.
Up next, the Sun Devils head to the Oregon schools to start the second half of Pac-12 play. They will face Oregon State on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m. PT and No. 23 Oregon on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 11:00 a.m. PT. The match against the Beavers will be livestreamed via OSUBeavers.com while the match against the Ducks will air on the Pac-12 Network.
