Nebraska Coach John Cook Demonstrates the Perfect Pass for a Back Set

A pass with backspin is the foundation of a perfect back set, according to Nebraska head coach John Cook, who led the Huskers to a National Championship win last year.

In this drill, posted on YouTube by ChampionshipProductions, Cook shows players how to start with a platform at a right angle to create backspin, so the setter can come forward into the pass, rather than swinging right to create sidespin, which would push her too far back to set the five or slide.

Cook is a two-time AVCA Coach of the Year (2005 and 2000) and a three-time National Championship coach (2015, 2006, 2000), all at Nebraska. This year is his 17th season as Nebraska head coach, and he has an all-time record of 480-63 with the Huskers.

Nebraska won the 2015 NCAA National Championship in December with a sweep of Texas. So far this season, Nebraska is 12-1, 3-1 Big Ten, with the only loss coming against Ohio State on Saturday. They face Indiana at home on Friday.

The video is an excerpt from a five-DVD set from 2012 from Championship Productions. The set features video of conditioning, drills, post-practice routines, and team meetings.
