Three Purdue athletes reflect on their time training with USA Volleyball on the USAV Collegiate National Team. Ashley Evans, Brooke Peters and Sherridan Atkinson were a part of the team that competed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in conjunction with the USAV Girls’ Junior National Championships.
The experience for the players on the roster for the event last 10 days, where the 36 players selected were split into three teams of 12. The athletes were chosen from the USA National Team tryouts that were held in March in Colorado Springs.
Evans, Peters and Atkinson all said in their interviews that they gained a lot of knowledge and that extra experience playing with new people and trying new things. Hearing new things from other coaches who were super knowledgeable in the sport of volleyball gave them a new perspective on the game. The knowledge is stuff that they could apply to their game this coming season and in the rest of their playing careers. Evans even brought a journal with her to take notes on the new techniques and ideas that the coaches presented them with.
Last season, Peters picked up 293 digs for an average of 2.27 digs per set while also adding 27 service aces. Evans produced 107 kills, 1,403 assists, 267 digs and 58 blocks. Atkinson put down 268 kills and had 73 blocks on the year.
The Boilermakers look at a tough 2017 schedule, being in the Big Ten, along with a tough preseason, including Kansas and Creighton, each of which made it to the NCAA Tournament.
