Speaking at the 22nd Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) General Assembly in Bangkok, Thailand last week, FIVB president Dr. Ary S. Graça F° has pledged the global organization’s efforts to help build both beach volleyball and the men’s indoor game in Asia ahead of, and beyond, the 2020 Olympic Games.
“The eyes of the Olympic Movement will be on the region over the next few years, with the next three Olympic Games being held here, and this is a fantastic chance for the FIVB,” President Graça said. “We were very successful at London 2012, and last year volleyball and beach volleyball were two of the most watched sports at Rio 2016. The FIVB’s aim is to continue and strengthen this popularity at Tokyo 2020.”
In a meeting with the AVC’s executive committee, Graça laid out FIVB’s key targets for Asia:
“I believe that we can develop a beach volleyball culture in Asia,” President Graça continued. “With the emergence of elite athletes and world class teams, the next generation of volleyball players will be inspired to play our sport.
This is the same strategy for men’s indoor volleyball in Asia. Traditionally the women’s game has been very strong, but our priority must be to raise the standard of the men’s game. It is a wonderful opportunity for us.”
