Brown volleyball head coach Diane Short has retired after 25 years at the helm of the Bears. Short retires with more wins than any other coach in program history with a career 257-395 record, including 7-18 in her final season.
During her tenure, she led Brown to 3 Ivy League titles – in 1996, 1998, and 2001, the latter of which they shared with Penn. That resulted in 2 NCAA tournament appearances (they lost the tie-breaker to Penn in 2001). The team also had 3 Ivy League Players of the Year (Cathy Luke in 1994, Tomo Nakanishi in 1998, Corry Myer in 2001), and 2 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Awards. She’s the only Brown coach to win an Ivy League title or have a player named Ivy League Player of the Year.
27 players were named to the All-Ivy League teams in the Short era, including 11 first-team honors.
“I want to thank Coach Short for her contributions to the Brown volleyball program and its student-athletes over the past 25 years,” Brown Director of Athletics Jack Hayes said. “I wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavors.”
“Over the past 25 years, I have been blessed to work with and coach so many incredible young women,” said Short. “The relationships that I have developed with players, coaches, and parents during that time will be cherished for the rest of my life. I now look forward to the next chapter in my life where I will spend more time with my husband and family.”
