For the third time this offseason, Nebraska Omaha is tacking on a transfer to its program. This time it comes in the form of Claire Leonard, a soon-to-be sophomore outside hitter. That will give her three years to look forward to with the program, as leaving conferences should make her immediately eligible.
Standing at 6’0″ tall, Leonard can also play middle blocker in addition to outside hitter. She came to Canisius from Bettendorf, Iowa as the move now brings her closer to home. Omaha to Bettendorf is a little over 300 miles, while Canisius to Bettendorf is about 700.
Leonard immediately made her presence felt as a true freshman and led the team in kills as she went for 308 (3.08 per set) on a .184 mark to go with 114 digs (1.14 per set), 46 blocks (0.46 per set) and eight aces (0.08 per set). That helped her to an appearance on the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2017.
Canisius, who finished 2017 at 10-18 and 8-10 in the MAAC, are left with three returning middle blockers and three outside hitters for their 2018 team.
For Leonard’s new team, Nebraska Omaha, they also went 10-18 on the year to pair with a 7-7 finish in the Summit League. It also gives the team four middle blockers and six outside hitters for their 2018 roster.
In terms of the other transfers coming in, Leonard joins ex-Creighton setter Jaclyn Taylor and former Drake DS/L Courtney Morehead.
