After another week of action, the RPI poll consisted of several changes – although none were huge jumps or drops from teams. That is especially true at the top, where Hawaii going up from nine to seven is the biggest leap in the top 10. Meanwhile, the highest fall is two spots as well, with Loyola Chicago dropping from three to five. That enabled BYU and UC Irvine to rank third and fourth respectively.
The importance of the Anteaters sliding up a spot is that now they are the second highest ranked team that is currently not winning their conference. With LBSU and BYU in that classification, UCLA is sitting pretty at second, as the race for the second at-large bid from the NCAA Tournament committee is tight between UC Irvine, whoever loses the MIVA between Loyola and Ohio State and even Hawaii and maybe Pepperdine. Knowing the committee’s reliance on the RPI though, it’s a good sign for Anteaters’ fans that they are in that second spot.
Some other interesting movement occurred in the teens, with Concordia Irvine dropping despite winning and King making a move to number 16. The question still remains if George Mason or whoever wins the EIVA and King/Barton or whoever wins the Conference Carolinas can rise a few spots and potentially not be in the #6 vs #7 play-in game, assuming a school who isn’t supposed to win their league gets hot in the tournament.
