CSKA’s series loss to Neftochimik in the finals of the Bulgarian Superleague marked the end of Ivaylo Stefanov’s 27th professional season as a professional volleyball player. The former Bulgarian national team outside hitter, however, is showing no signs of fatigue, and is adamant on continuing playing, at least for one more season. Stefanov, who is the oldest active men’s professional volleyball player in an elite league, talked to the media after the game and his plans for the future (Sportal.bg):

“It is very good for me to play a final series, these boys have a future. It is important to feel the thrill, and I will not hide it, it is a great pleasure for me to play the finals Some of the oldest volleyball players playing in Bulgaria have learned from me. I wish that everyone could play the game as long as possible and feel the great pleasure of it. I want to continue playing as long as my health is ok. Although I know an injury could end my career at any time, I do not intend to end it yet.”

Curiously, Stefanov retired in 2006 after a season with PlusLiga’s Jastrzębski Węgiel, but in 2009 decided to come back to the courts again and joined CSKA. He has been there ever since, acting both as a coach and a player. What makes this story even more incredible is that Stefanov is not a setter or libero, volleyball positions more common related to career longevity.
