Former North Carolina Central and University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown outside hitter Sydney Sumner has found a new home and will be attending Hampton in 2018 after transferring in.
Sumner will be a redshirt junior come the fall with two years left of play. She is set to be immediately eligible for the Pirates.
Sumner recently redshirted this past season in 2017 with her most recent play coming in 2016 for Pitt-Johnstown in 2016 as a true sophomore. For the year, she notched 45 kills on a .166 hitting percentage, 28 digs, 12 blocks and a pair of aces for a team that went 25-10 in Division II.
One year prior, Sumner was in the Division I classification for NC Central. She appeared in 23 matches and 75 sets and recorded 139 kills (1.85 per set) on a .071 clip, 159 digs (2.12 per set), 13 blocks and nine aces.
A 6’0″ native of Seaford, Virginia, Sumner came to college after attending York High School where she was first-team all-conference and all-league multiple times. She also played with Coastal Virginia Volleyball Club.
Hampton is coming off of a 13-17 season in 2017 in which they went 7-5 as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Pirates had six players who could play outside hitter in 2017, but one graduated and another transferred in starter Reeana Richardson (to Charlotte). That leaves an opening for Sumner to slide into, as she looks to compete for a starting role with the other returners.
