Three-Peat: Cincinnati’s Jordan Thompson Claims 3rd-Straight AAC Honor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference has announced the winners of the league’s weekly volleyball honors for the week ending on September 15.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jordan Thompson * R-Jr. * OH * Cincinnati

Thompson picks up her third-consecutive weekly honor and seventh of her career, following another tremendous offensive outing over the weekend. Thompson averaged a conference-high 7.45 kills and 8.45 points per set, while hitting .394. She set a league record with 32 kills in a four-set win over crosstown rival Xavier and knocked down 35 kills in a five-set match against Indiana. She has reached the 30-kill mark five times over the past three weeks. Thompson also averaged 1.45 digs per set with nine blocks and six service aces, earning a spot on the All-Queen City Classic team.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jordan Pingel * Sr. * L * UCF

Pingel led the Knights’ back row, as the team extended its winning streak to six matches after another 3-0 weekend at the Volleyknights Invitational. She averaged 5.18 digs per set with 11 assists and a .947 reception percentage, earning All-Tournament honors. Pingel had double-digit digs in sweeps over Alabama State and Florida Gulf Coast, before recording a season-high 29 digs in a 3-2 win over Yale.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL

McKenna Melville * Fr. * OH * UCF

Melville continues to shine in her freshman season, as she earned a second-straight MVP honor at the Volleyknights Invitational. Melville led the team with 5.36 kills and 3.00 digs per set, averaging a .333 hitting percentage with two double-doubles, five service aces and seven blocks. She had 11 kills in a sweep over Alabama State before registering a career-high 24 kills twice in wins over Florida Gulf Coast and Yale.

Katie Karbo * Jr. * DS/L * Houston

Karbo earned her second All-Tournament nod of the season at the RMU Sheraton Invitational after anchoring Houston’s back row with 5.77 digs per set, tallying more than 20 digs through a 2-1 weekend. She had 23 digs in each of the four-set wins over Eastern Michigan and Duquesne before reaching a season-high 29 digs at Robert Morris. She averaged a .967 reception percentage and recorded 19 assists.

Jac’cara Walker * Jr. * OH * USF

Walker was named to an All-Tournament team for the second time this year after recording 4.00 kills, 4.10 points and 3.10 digs per set with a pair of double-doubles at the USF Classic. She led the team with 19 kills on 32 swings without an error for a .594 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win over North Dakota. She then had 12 kills and 13 digs in a five-set match against Charlotte. Walker hit .302 in the Bulls’ three matches over the weekend.

Mia Heirakuji * Sr. * L * Temple

Heirakuji helped the Owls get back on track, leading the back row with 62 digs and 5.64 digs per set over the weekend. Temple went 2-0 Saturday with wins over New Hampshire and Princeton. The libero had 22 digs in a 3-1 win against the Wildcats and set a career-high with 32 digs in another four-set win over the Tigers, who won the Ivy League in 2017.

Lexie Douglas * So. * OH * Tulane

Douglas was named MVP of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic and had double-digit kills three times through Tulane’s 3-0 the weekend.  She hit .500 with 13 kills in a 3-2 win over Little Rock before returning to the court and pummeling 12 more kills in a 3-1 win against Villanova. She ended the week hitting .387 with 15 kills, six digs and three blocks, as the Green Wave outlasted Clemson 3-2 for their sixth-straight win.
