Indiana’s Top Scorer Kendall Beerman Out for the Season

Indiana redshirt junior outside hitter Kendall Beerman will miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury. The 6’2″ native of Lexington, Kentucky leads the Hoosiers with 179 kills (3.38/set) this season, and was hitting .235 with 8 service aces before the injury. She went down in the 2nd set of the team’s 3-0 loss to Minnesota, where she recorded her 700th career kill. The Hoosiers lost the first 2 sets 25-21 and 25-19, and then lost 25-14 in the 3rd set after Beerman’s injury.

The loss means a likely increased offensive role for Elizabeth Asdell, who ranked 2nd on the team in kills last season but has taken on a more diminutive role this year; and sophomore Kamryn Malloy, who has 70 swings in her last 3 matches after only 11 in the rest of the season combined.

“Unfortunately, it looks like this old knee of mine needs an upgrade,” Beerman said in a post to her personal Twitter account. “I feel so much love and support from my team, staff, friends and family here at IU. I am  so blessed. Just another opportunity to attack this and come back even better next year. All good here.”

Having already used her redshirt on her freshman season, barring a special injury waiver (which seems unlikely given that she’s played 53 sets this season), she will have 1 year of eligibility remaining next season.

Indiana is 11-4 this season in their first year under new head coach Steve Aird. That’s already just 1 shy of their 12 wins from last season. The team is 2-2 in the Big Ten, which ties them with 5 other teams for 5th place. Next week, they’ll face Michigan State and Michigan on the road before travelling on October 10th to face the defending NCAA Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers.
