- Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug (Argentina) pull out a hard-fought win against Marta Menegatti and Laura Giombini (Italy) in three sets (22-20, 19-21, 15-11)
The Italian duo started the match on a 3-0 run, off an attack, block and an attack hit out by Gallay. Argentina came back to tie the first set at 5-5 and continued to take charge coming up with at 13-8 lead. Menegatti and Giombini fought to get the set tied up at 20 all late in the set off a number of Gallay errors. The set ended win Argentina on top at 22-20 with a Klug kill and a Giombini error.
The second set was a marathon of back and forth points, featuring 13 different ties, the last coming at 16-16. The Italians each came up with kills to take a late 18-16 lead. Giombini slammed down two kills to further the lead to 20-17, making it set point. A Gallay kill and Klug tool, brought the pair within one point at 19-20, but a Giombini shot off the block ended the second set 21-19, forcing a third.
Four Argentina kills and ace and Italian error put Gallay and Klug ahead early in the third with a 6-2 lead. The Italians came to within two at 8-6, but that is the closest they came to the Argentinians in the third, before the pair put an end to the match with a 15-11 finish.
Argentina pair Gallay and Klug eliminated Italians Menegatti and Giombini and advance to the quarterfinals, where Brazilians Talita and Larissa will be waiting to face them at 3pm.
- Swiss duo Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre eliminate Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas (Canada) in straight sets (24-22, 21-19)
The first set started by each team trading points until it reached at 4-4 tie, then Valjas put down two kills and a service ace to take a 7-4 lead. The Canadians maintained a three to four point lead most of the match, but the Swiss didn’t give up, tying the set at 17-17. They traded points much like at the beginning of the set, coming to a tie at 22 all. A Forrer kill and Broder error ended the first 24-22 in favor of the Swiss.
The second set was no different than the first, except it was a back and forth battle the entire match. The set featured 13 ties, the final coming at 19-19, where a Forrer tool and a Valjas error in the net ended the match at 21-19.
Forrer/Verge-Depre advance to the quarterfinals, eliminating Broder/Valjas. They will face Laboureur/Sude (Germany) at 3pm.

- Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst (Germany) win first match of tournament, defeating Canadian pair Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson in three (21-17, 18-21, 15-10)
The first started with a back and forth point exchange between the teams tying every point up until 8-8. The German squad utilized a service error and a Walkenhorst block to go up 10-8. The Canadians battled back to get within one at 12-13, but Ludwig and Walkenhorst pulled ahead, taking the set 21-17.
Canada started the second on a 5-2 run, but the Germans quickly tied up the set at 8-8. From there six straight ties came, ending on 14 all. The German duo put down a kill and monster block, to go ahead 16-14, but the Canadians quickly fought back to tie the game at 17-17. Canada went on a 4-1 run to end the set 21-18.
The deciding third set started with a quick 5-5 tie, but 6-0 run put the Germans ahead 11-6. The Canadians tried battling back but couldn’t keep up, dropping the match 15-10.
The reining Olympic champions eliminate Canada from the tournament with the win, and await Kerri Walsh-Jennings and April Ross of the United States in the quarterfinals at 4pm.
- Australian pair Taliqua Clancy and Louise Bawden win first match of tournament with straight set win over Spaniards Liliana Steiner and Elsa McMillan (21-19, 21-15)
Australian pair battled hard in the first set, with nine ties in the set, the last coming at 15-15. Spain kept it close the remainder of the set, but couldn’t hold on, dropping the set 19-21.
The second set went the same way for the Australians, a back and forth marathon match. Tied up at 12-12, Australia went on a 4-0 run to bring a 16-12 gap between the two teams. The Spaniards couldn’t keep up and are eliminated from the tournament after dropping the set and match 21-15.
The Australian pair eliminated Spain with the win. Swiss duo Heidrich/Zumkehr is their next challenge at 4pm.
