The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (20-0) completed a 5-0 sweep of San Jose State (5-6) to conclude the Monterey Invitational II at Del Monte Beach on Sunday, April 2, and ran its record-setting winning streak to 50 consecutive duals. The streak is among the top 10 longest in USC history across all sports.
USC took the first point of the dual at court five where sophomore Katrina Kernochan and freshman Lainy Thomas completed a 21-19, 21-15 win over Summer Avery and Jamie Hirai. The Trojans took a 2-0 lead when juniors Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer defeated Julia Golbeck and Kaitlynn Zdroik, 21-9, 21-6, at court four.
At court three, freshman Joy Dennis and senior Allie Wheeler teamed to take down Luiza Andrade and Giulia Gávio, 21-13, 21-16, to clinch the dual. USC’s fourth point came from the No. 2 position where junior Terese Cannon and senior Nicolette Martin put together a 21-18, 21-10 win over Nandyala Gama and Julie Sam.
For the sweep, the Women of Troy got the final point from the top court as seniors Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes took down Allison Meehan and Lyndi Scholl 21-10, 21-11 for their 99th consecutive match win. In a non-counting match, freshmen Cammie Dorn and Avery Hazelrigg claimed a 21-14, 21-18 win over Ciara Reistad and Breann Robinson.
USC returns home to host Washington (4 p.m. PT) and Arizona State (6 p.m.) for duals at Merle Norman Stadium on Friday, April 7.
