Michigan State volleyball is preparing for a foreign tour of Italy that will allow the Spartans some high-level training and competition in addition to exposure to some of the country’s most important historical sites, cultural landmarks, and the breathtaking views of several cities throughout the country.

As part of the tour, student-athletes will engage in academic study while abroad. These academic components of the trip will incorporate individualized learning and research opportunities for student-athletes to explore and study certain aspects of Italian culture, geography, and governmental structure.

“This is a great opportunity for our program on so many levels,” said head coach Cathy George, who recently completed her 12th season as the Spartan head coach. “We will play four games, including two against national teams, which will test us as well as give all of our players some exposure to the international game. We’ll visit many of the famous monuments and sites throughout the country that are likely bucket-list items, and we will do and see things that will allow us to bond and grow as a team as well. We’re very excited for this adventure. I have to extend a thank you not only personally but also on behalf of our program to Mark Hollis and all of our administration for their support of this trip – we are very thankful that we were able to make this happen for our program.”

The Spartans are scheduled to play four matches while on the tour, taking on a pair of high-level Italian Clubs (Volleyro Roma and Club Italia) as well as the Italian and Slovenian junior national teams.

Sightseeing during the trip also promises to be spectacular, as the Spartans will visit sites in the northernmost Trieste Region as well as working their way through Venice, Milan, and Rome.
