Altholton Defeats Damascus In 3A For First State Title Since 1989

The Maryland high school volleyball state championships concluded on November 19, crowning five champions.

The tournament took place from November 17-19 at the Ritchie Coliseum in College Park, Maryland.

Class 1A

Smithsburg defeated Perryville in four sets to take the 1A title 3-1, 25-19, 13-25, 26-24, 25-20.

Recording a double-double for Smithsburg was Lauryn Daniels with 16 kills and 12 digs. Setter Katie McCracken also posted a double-double with 39 assists and 12 digs. Leading the offense was Sydney Scott with 23 kills.

For Perryville, Gabby Goodnow led the way with 17 kills on a .406 hitting percentage. Brooke Reynolds picked up 15 digs, while Hailey Jones added 12.

Class 2A

Williamsport took the 2A title from Rising Sun in five sets 3-2, 25-23, 25-18, 29-31, 18-25, 15-11).

Two players for Williamsport recorded double-doubles – Keara Lewis with 20 kills and 19 digs, while setter Britany Malphurs dished out 22 assists and 17 digs. Two other players put down double-digit kills – Brynn Lewis and Devon Grosebeck with 10 a piece. In the back row, Samantha Baker picked up 15 digs and Alyssa Shoemaker added 17.

Rising Sun had three players who recorded double-doubles – Mackenzie Blevins with 33 assists and 16 digs, Lacey Swartout added 19 kills and 14 digs and Breanne Haley with 16 kills and 18 digs.

Class 3A

Atholton defeated Damascus in four sets to take the 3A championship 3-1, 17-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22.

Altholton had three players who recorded double-doubles – Samantha Miller with 18 kills and 12 digs, Lisa Zoch with 13 kills and 20 digs and setter Hope Kelly with 42 assists and 12 digs. Elise Park picked up 12 digs and four aces, while Kelly Simon posted seven blocks.

Isabel Nelligan of Damascus posted a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs, while setter Kaylen Bernota added 32 assists and 10 digs. Sara Gruber put down 13 kills, while Olivia Fagan added 11. In the back court, Sarah Bowers picked up 15 digs and Sarah Noland added 14.

Class 4A

Northwest rolled through Sherwood in the 4A title match 3-0, 25-19, 25-10, 25-17.

Jenaisya Moore led all players with 24 kills on a .500 hitting percentage and seven digs for Northwest. Nicole Reinikka added a match-best five aces and six digs.

For Sherwood, Kaiya H-Powell put down 16 kills.
